  • City of Port St Lucie - Hurricanes and Storms *note: The City will not be distributing sandbags. The City does not recommend the use of sandbags to prevent water from seeping into a building. They are more effective in controlling the flow of water. Sandbags also can cause problems following a storm, potentially clogging drainage systems.

WHEN TO INSTALL SHUTTERS

When a Hurricane Watch is issued for your area check all mechanisms and hardware again, and maybe pre-install the more difficult shutters. If you live in an evacuation zone and it will take 2 or 3 hours to complete your shutter installation, you may want to start during the Watch phase. If you are not in an evacuation zone you should time your installation early in the Warning phase so that you are not struggling with panels during high winds.

 INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS

In Florida, insurance companies often strongly recommend or require homeowners to install hurricane shutters to protect their property during a storm. While not all policies explicitly mandate shutters, failing to use them can lead to penalties on claims. For example, Citizens Insurance, the state’s largest property insurer, imposes a penalty of up to 15% on claims if homeowners don’t put up shutters before a storm1.

It’s always a good idea to check your specific policy details or consult with your insurance provider to understand their requirements and recommendations.

Helene was a Category 4 storm when it made landfall near Perry, Fla., on Thursday, Sept. 26.

Within hours, Helene delivered damaging wind gusts as well as “catastrophic, life-threatening, and record-breaking” flooding.

As of Sept. 27, millions still remain without power in Florida.

The devastation in Steinhatchee, Fl, is beyond words: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/nbF7MKs2aT4oCDcJ

“Numerous significant landslides” are also expected in the southeastern Appalachians.

While donations of clothing, food and bottled water inevitably rush in, aid organizations say they can create logistical nightmares. A financial contribution to a reputable organization, on the other hand, can be funneled to wherever and whatever need is greatest.
